Business Management Teachers Explored Alternatives To Traditional Lectures

KENINGAU: A team of teachers from business management programme at Keningau Vocational College developed their own board game that they referred to as “I-BTS” (International-Buy,Trace, Sell) in order to offer a more exciting yet meaningful learning experience to their students.

The team which comprised four teachers, Ms. Farizah Parmen, Ms. Clayvionna Thomas and Mr. Abdul Mushowwir Muhammad along with their mentor, Ms. Ernawaty Hudong, have presented this project at an Indonesian virtual conference and showcased it at a national online innovation contest last year.

These teachers discovered that their students tended to merely memorize economic concepts and theories but were unable to apply them in practical contexts.

Inspired by various board games, this team created their own board game that could help the players become more adept at applying the concepts of international trades and global economy through a tabletop map-based game.

Their preliminary findings revealed that their students seemed to show a great level of engagement and improved understanding on how these concepts were put into use.

The teachers also received positive responses from international audience when they presented this innovation at SEA-STEM Conference which was virtually hosted by Universitas Syiah Kuala, Indonesia, on 20-22 October 2020.

They also earned a bronze medal at eCarnival of Research and Innovation (eCRI) 2020 organized by Universiti Malaysia Kelantan on 23 November 2020. They aimed to do more research on the project and expand its usage across all the business management cohorts at the school.

The director of the college, Mr. Johari @ Jaibet Bin Sabin, commended the teachers’ dedication in improving their teaching practice through innovative approach.

He always encourages his teachers to explore more alternatives on how to assist their students in order to produce graduates with exceptional qualities.

The teachers and students at the college have taken part in various competitions and conferences across North America, Europe, Asia and Oceania and have bagged multiple awards and grants.
